ParentsWe encourage parental involvement as this makes for a healthier show, and good communication within
families. We enjoy strong support from parents with assistance in Catering, Costumes, maintenance of
the show's Scenery and Costumes halls.
If you are a parent of a Showtime member and are able to help out in any of the areas listed above,
please contact Susan Mahler (Parents & Supporters
Director).
FAQ for New ParentsIf this could be your first year as a Camberwell Showtime parent, you may have a few questions,
like ...
Why do Showtime?
The difference between school and Showtime is the Scout method - the idea that education should be
active, in small groups, and fun. Showtime is about developing confidence, teamwork and self-esteem.
What About School?
Showtime's program has been audited against Levels 4 - 6 of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. It supports the
dimensions of Managing Personal Learning, Building Social Relationships, Working in Teams, Presenting,
Creativity and Creating & Making. Showtimers are expected to keep up with their school work and make a
commitment to do so as part of their application. For older students, this year, we will be running a
homework club at a Scout Hall near the theatre, enabling show members to keep up with their work during
the run of the show.
At what age should Scouts and Guides join Showtime?
That depends. For most, age 11 is OK - less school pressure, lots of support, the chance to sleep
in a few mornings after a 10pm finish. The cast ranges from grade 5 through VCE to university and work.
Who looks after the young people in Showtime?
Showtime has a youth focus but it's run by trained volunteer Leaders and parents. There is a huge
welfare network to ensure that the Showtime experience is a positive one for all members.
Just as in a Scout Troop or Guide Unit, the key people are the Patrol Leaders of the cast
and Technical Team - youth members with previous experience in the show, who can assist new members
with settling in, finding their way around and keeping up with what's going on. Then there's the
Personnel Team: adults (both leaders and parents) who keep an eye on things at rehearsals, know where
everyone is and make sure that everyone is safe. All adults working with young people in Showtime
undergo a Working With Children Check.
Why so many hours, and late nights?
Showtime has fewer rehearsals, tighter organisation, earlier shows, and a shorter performance than
most equivalent shows. Why nine shows? Why go to school five days? Because you learn more! Showtimers
finish a season knowing they've achieved something - rather than feeling like it was all over before
they really got going!
